| Events 2007 | ||
| Last year was an exciting and varied one for Steel Pan Events, a selection of the events being listed below. | ||
| Boat Show - O2 Arena | |||
|
|
2007 kicked off with seven days in the champagne bar of Britain's leading luxury yatch manufacturer, Sunseeker, at the National Boat show in the O2 arena. As I played gentle Caribbean music for the guests and clients of Sunseeker, amidst thousands of boat enthusiasts and exhibition stands, I was completely awestruck by the size, elegance and decadence of their yachts. They fed me well between sets too! 'Not a bad way to make a living' was a thought that crossed my mind more than once during the week. | ||
| Billy Ocean - June 2007 | |
| June was a very busy month with the highlight being the opportunity to meet and play for legendary singer BILLY OCEAN (When The Going Gets Tough, Caribbean Queen, Suddenly). Although Mr Ocean was famous for his pop songs, he started off singing traditional Caribbean songs, and he told me he is in the process of recording a new Caribbean album for a major label. As well as singing, Billy plays pan for top London steel Band, Ebony. He was a pleasure to speak to and the party (Kim's 50th birthday) was a great night. |

| Guernsey Steel Band - September 2007 | ||
| In September I delivered a brand new set of steel pans to Beechwood College in Guernsey. This involved ordering the pans from renowned tuner Tony Charles in London, then taking them by Ferry to the school, where I spent two days doing workshops with the students. Since then the band has taken off under the leadership of Head of Music, Fiona Le Tissier, and we are in discussions with organising an exchange trip in 2008 with our student band in Worthing. The attached photos show the inside of Tony Charles's Aladdin's Cave-like studio and the students putting the pans to good use. | ||

| Caribbean Night - December 2007 | |
West Worthing tennis and squash club went totally tropical on Saturday 8th December 2007 with a festive Caribbean night. Rachel Heyward and I teamed up to entertain the members, who got into the swing of things very quickly. A great night as had by all. | ![]() |

| Recycling for Africa Partnership | |
![]() | I'm delighted to announce that I will be helping a fantastic charity set up by Radio and TV broadcaster, Ambrose Harcourt, called 'Recycling4Africa'. Through collecting used and discarded mobile phones, Ambrose is aiming to raise enough money to build a hospital in Nigeria. I will be aiming to contribute in two ways. Half of the proceeds of my current CD, 'Jamob', will go straight to the charity fund. Secondly, I will be asking my school customers to house a 'Recycling4Africa mobile phone bin' as a place where parents and the local community can deposit their old phones instead of throwing them away. I'm very much looking forward to collaborating with Ambrose on this charity project for the foreseeable future. For more information, please visit www.recycling4africa.co.uk |
